Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Your Physical Exam

Posted on: 29 December 2016

If you are trying to be responsible about your health, then there is a good chance that you have scheduled a physical exam that will allow you to more thoroughly have a doctor look over your body and tell you if he or she sees any problems. The benefit of this is that you get a decent overview of all of your health issues. The problem with a physical is that because your doctor is going over so much, he or she might give you a lot of information that you might not know what to do with. Here are some tips for making sure that you make the most of your physical exams.

1. Record the Advice Your Doctor Gives You

Your first step is to make sure that you are paying attention and recording any advice that your doctor gives you. You could ask your doctor ahead of time if it would be okay if you recorded him or her at certain times when he or she is giving you instructions so that you can make sure that you are following the instructions to the letter. You can bring a notebook and pen with you to write anything down that you want to remember, including questions that you want to ask at the end. Finally, you could also bring a family member or friend along to be a second set of ears to catch any instructions.

2. Write Down Your Medications and Dosages

Before you go to the appointment, make sure that you write down all of the medications that you are taking, as well as their dosages. You will likely not remember what the dosages are unless you write them down. Also think back about any dietary supplements or vitamins that you are taking. Your doctor will need all of this information in order to give you well-informed advice.

3. Steel Yourself to Ask About Uncomfortable Topics

Finally, be sure that you steel yourself to ask about uncomfortable topics, such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, or a potential eating disorder. Practice asking questions about these topics in the mirror before you go in order to make sure that you are used to saying the words and will be able to more easily ask your doctor about them.

For more information, talk to the doctor that is going to be giving you the physical exam to see how he or she would like you to prepare.

Finding The Right Doctor

When I was a kid, I absolutely loved going to our family doctor. He was kind, warm, and incredibly funny. My checkups were always painless and stress-free, and it was because our physician really cared about the child's experience. When I became a parent, I looked long and hard for a primary care physician before I found one, but I am happy to report that I finally found someone who worked well for what we needed. This blog is all about working with a great family doctor, knowing what to look for, and avoiding problems during appointments so that your kids can be happy.
